The Principles of Adult Learning Skills

There is a big difference between learning skills practiced by children and those employed by adults. The process of learning in humans begins in the womb and continues through childhood at school and university.

When we become adults the process of learning changes, and is different from when we were children. The most important step as an adult is that we must want to learn, and to achieve this we have to ensure that we have the correct positive mindset.

It is not possible to learn when you have a negative frame of mind. Adults learn effectively only when their motivation to cultivate a new ability or to attain a specific type of knowledge is strong.

Young children are taught a specific curriculum at school so as to prepare them for the time when they start streaming in different academic directions. Adults on the other hand will only study what they feel they want or need to study. They are necessarily more practical in their approach to learning.

In order to learn effectively an adult must already have a brain that has been prepared with prior knowledge. At the same time they must have prepared themselves so that they have the correct positive attitude to go out and learn. Adults do not like to be told what to do. They would rather be guided by being given the right information that enables them to choose the path that helps them on their individual requirements.

As an adult you have to be responsible for what you learn, and what you learn will mostly be based on the effort that you are prepared to put in. Every avenue brings us back to the same place, and that is your mindset. In order to learn as an adult you must have a positive way of thinking.

How do you do this? How do you know what your present state of mind is?
